With the title European Capital of Democracy 2024/2025, Vienna has spent a year demonstrating just how vibrant and diverse democratic participation can be in a modern city. At the heart of this special year was the development of the Wiener Demokratie-Strategie, created through an open, transparent and broadly inclusive participation process completed in spring 2025. Workshops, district events, online participation opportunities and expert dialogues ensured that many perspectives were incorporated into the strategy.
The European Office of the Board of Education for Vienna was also present at the festive conclusion of the Democracy Year on 18 November, 2025. Our key message: democracy education – in the spirit of European Citizenship Education – must be firmly anchored in everyday school life. Young people should experience early on how valuable participation, dialogue and responsible action are for our shared future!
