Scrolling, liking, sharing but also critically questioning and helping to shape the future? How young people can use digital media in a self-determined way and actively participate in democratic processes was the focus of our project kick-off event “COCO media – Conscious Consumers in media” on September 30, 2026, at the Museum of Society and Economy in Vienna.
About 80 participants from Vienna and Bratislava came together to discuss media literacy, AI literacy, and democratic participation. The keynote by an AI expert from the University of Cambridge provided practical insights into teaching AI and media literacy in schools. In the subsequent panel discussion with representatives from the fields of media, civil society, and education, it became clear that young people must be met where they are. Building relationships and offering hands-on opportunities are key prerequisites for successful media and democracy education.
Our Interreg project COCO media addresses these needs through innovative educational initiatives. Young people are not merely seen as consumers of digital content; rather, they are empowered to think critically, ask questions, and actively shape the society they live in.
