On September 30, 2026, we launched the Interreg project “Signs for Education,” initiating cross-border cooperation aimed at improving educational opportunities for deaf children in the Czech Republic and Austria. Our kick-off workshop focused on the exchange of teaching materials for literacy instruction in deaf education. The goal of subsequent workshops is the collaborative development and evaluation of teaching materials for deaf and hard-of-hearing children at the primary school level.
The materials are based on insights from “Deaf Didactics” and take into account the visual, linguistic, and structural learning needs of deaf children. New sign language videos, mutual classroom observations, and two cultural festivals—held in Brno and Vienna—are designed to further support communication and networking among the school communities. In this way, the project provides a significant impetus for inclusive education—across borders.
