The way in which we think about and answer questions regarding the crimes of National Socialism will define our relationship to ourselves and to our neighbours. Should we still remember? In what way should we remember? What is the task of the third and fourth generations? Which kind of contribution can schools, memorial sites, organisations and museums make? At what age should pupils be confronted with the topic? Does traditional history teaching not start too late to deal with the topic. Finally, coupled with ‘Remembering and Commemorating’ is also the responsibility to strengthen democratic competences. In a bilateral Regio-project in the context of the EU-programme for lifelong learning, education authorities, associations, memorial sites and schools in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Vienna focussed on these questions. The goal was to exchange and further develop approaches and methodologies to teach younger pupils about the topic.
