Short description:

The project SUST-DARA is based on the RiverLab, a modern hydraulic engineering laboratory opened in 2023 at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna. The lab focuses on key issues such as water use and protection, sustainable hydropower, flood risk management and river restoration along the Danube and Raab rivers in the border region between Hungary and Austria.
A key part of the project is raising awareness about climate protection, with a focus on water – both among the general public and in schools. Workshops and field trips for schools on water related topics, and the use of water testing kits are designed to help students to gain a deeper understanding of environmental challenges and learn more about water-related ecosystems.

Offers & activities for Viennese schools (grades 3-8):

  • Interactive guided tours & workshops for teachers and schools at the RiverLab, BOKU Vienna focusing on sustainable water management
  • Equipping 8 Viennese pilot schools with analytical cases “compact water laboratory”
  • 2 workshops for Viennese teachers on the use of analytic kits in class
  • 1 study visit to Hungary for Viennese teachers to encourage cross-border networking and professional exchange in STEM education
