Mentorship is critical for supporting newcomers to the teaching profession particularly in disadvantaged schools, yet structured induction programmes remain rare and few novice teachers have access to high-quality mentorship. However, the effective mentoring of newcomers could save time and costs, increase the effectiveness, job satisfaction, retention and attractiveness of the profession.
NEST will design and pilot a new, adaptive mentoring model for novice teachers working at disadvantaged schools as a relevant and effective solution to the need to increase effectiveness, motivation and retention and to boost the attractiveness of the profession. The outcomes of the project will provide authorities, policy makers, universities, and non-governmental organizations with guidance as they likewise seek to introduce adaptive support for newcomer teachers in their own contexts.
